For lovers of New Wave. 4BEL is an electro-acoustic musician and visual artist from Reading, England. Blending soul with the darkness of New Wave, his stlye consists of an unsual mix of punk, electro and ska. It all started after a performance on My Cornwall TV back in 2010, where he eventually landed a creative partnership with the acclaimed Damian Rodd. This meeting saw the two cultivate a more psychedelic feel, and craft a sound that would make earlobes melt or nerve endings shatter and explode.

I am a young singer/songwriter originally based in Gloucestershire and now find myself between the South West and South East writing catchy, melodic songs about dreams, drives and impulses.
Previously in the Rhetoric, I decided to try my own thing when my song writing tastes developed further and I felt like a change.
This latest collection of songs on Victoria’s Place still features the characteristic syncopated acoustic guitar alongside gentle picked arpeggios familiar to those who have seen me perform live on my own, but offers a depth in new band arrangements of previous songs that give an extra punch, drive and, most importantly, groove. The live show with or without a band is exciting, inviting and full of wit. Miriam (BBC Gloucestershire) wrote “His voice is high pitched and his style is untraceable…this is not a man who is afraid of improvisation”. For me, the most enjoyable aspect of music is the feeling that something you have written has got to someone be it a rhythm, melody or lyric.

Dante is a Cheltenham-based singer-songwriter, who’s passion for acoustic intimacy and knack for good, old-fashioned pop hooks seep through his thought-provoking, organic repertoire. His lyrics, which fluctuate from the deeply personal to the abstract and philosophical, hark back to poets Allen Ginsberg and Leonard Cohen, while his music echoes Jeff Buckley, Elliott Smith and Radiohead.

Previously a member of “madcap” ska-funksters Emmett Brown, Dante’s solo career is only just starting, but recent gigs have received excellent reception and people are already talking.

Brendan Rogers

Brendan is emerging on the burgeoning folk scene with an impassioned set of widely influenced folk songs. His rousing vocals are complimented by the accompaniment of strings, woodwind and brass.

He recorded his first set of demos with Grammy winner Dom Morley (Amy Winehouse, Adele, The Police..) who approached him after seeing him play a solo show in London. On the back of these demos he then went on to secure some great support slots with the likes of the Magic Numbers, Madison Violet and Joel Plaskett.

Changing Horses

Changing Horses are a quirky British, pop, folk, indie, rock male and female duo who formed in November 2007 whilst based in Preston. Comprised of Richard Birtill (vocals and guitar) and Francesca Cullen (vocals, violin, mandolin and melodeon) the band have a sound of their own, mixing the psychedelic folk of The Incredible String Band with the experimental art-punk of The Fall finished off with a coating of the kind of pop sensibility found in an Abba classic.

They will be launching their debut Ep, “The Nashville sessions“, in Lincoln in the new year.

Jake Watson is a Folk/Acoustic artist originally coming from Hampshire. Whilst living in Cheltenham Jake recently recorded his first studio EP back in April and will be releasing another by Christmas. David Amar is a multi-instrumentalist who has been playing since he was a small child and beauty Hannah Garner had just formed a You Tube channel onto which she loaded tracks of herself singing acappella renditions of various covers into a web cam. So well received were these little amateur videos that not only had hundreds of thousands of fans viewed them but four thousand actually subscribed to the channel. And Hannah was only 17 years old at the time.

Bucknall, who is responsible for discovering and producing Sony / BMG's Sam Beeton, signed them first to the Cubit Recordings label and then took them into his Nottingham-based "Nursery" studios and began recording an album for the talented duo together with co producer Robert de Fresnes and Miss 600 was born. Their debut album 'Buying Time' showcases their talent around simple catchy pop tunes with more than a jazz twist.

Nina Condron

19 year old Nina Condron is a singer songwriter originally from Leicestershire, however now resides in cheltenham where she is studying popular music. Her music is acoustic, folk, melancholiac, keeping it simple with soft acoustic guitar and haunting vocals.

She sings a mixture of classic tunes such as The smiths and Paul Weller along with modern numbers such as Editors and also her own, which are dark songs on a backdrop of cheery guitar. Beans on Toast is one man with a guitar, writing songs that he claims ‘have the same chords’ and ‘sound like Billy Bragg’.

Beans on Toast blends a dark wit with serious social and political satire based on a diverse range of subjects including cocaine, Tesco, London, gun crime, myspace, global warming and the Lake District. Thrill Collins are a band on a mission to revive the genre the world forgot; skiffle. The band rework the popular songbook of the "golden age of pop" into melodious rockabilly anthems. Last year saw the band tour Europe and America, and play numerous major music festivals. The band's first EP, recorded by legendary British producer George Shilling (Blur, Texas and James Brown) is out now.

Tellison

There are four of them. They are boys. They play Fender Telecasters and Jazz Basses and Gibson Melody Makers and 1960s Ludwig drums. They care a lot and practice a lot. They met during an earthquake on the Isle of Arran, an island with remarkable diversity of landscapes and seascapes.

Tellison have released one album and several singles, they've been a Myspace Recommended Artist twice, featured on the first two seasons of Channel 4's "The Inbetweeners" and their most recent single reached no. 4 in the independent music chart. Meanwhile they've toured relentlessly and without cease and shared stages with bands like Biffy Clyro, Noah and the Whale, Tubelord, Hot Club de Paris, Johnny Foreigner and many many more.

Pink Crudge Caravan create a rowdy mixture of psychedelic grunge, which they like to call Crudge. The band are on a mission to play an exciting cacophony of rock and roll at its very best. We can proudly announce that Ellen and the Escapades will be playing at Walk the Line 2011 on Saturday 8th of October. The band’s appearance will come after they embark on a hugely busy summer of performing at the commercially worldwide festivals ‘Glastonbury’ and ‘Bestival’ and also performing at smaller prestigious events such as ‘2000 Tress’ and ‘Lounge on the Farm’.

Ellen and the Escapades have been touring for several years which have provided a strong fan base and a huge demand for this band to perform all over the United Kingdom. Not only popular through fans, Ellen and the rest of the folk/rock quintet have gained critical acclaim. Through Ellen’s mesmerizing vocals and relatable lyrics, the band won the Q Magazine/ Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition in 2010 which led to playing at 5 stages during the festival of the same year.

The band has shown great progress since releasing the debut single ‘Without You’ on their home grown record label, Branch Out Records in 2009. Midwest Dilemma will be playing at Walk the Line festival on Friday 7th October 2011.

Midwest Dilemma – a guitar, red trucker hat, folk songs, and an old Toyota wagon on open road. Justin Lamoureux has been performing as Midwest Dilemma for nearly a decade. Over hills, valleys, across high plains, mountains, forests, deserts, rivers, oceans and destinations near and far to share his experiences and stories of life in the Midwest.

But there is nothing typical about Midwest Dilemma. Lamoureux recruited 23 musical collaborators for the debut release titled Timelines & Tragedies in 2008. The revolving cast of characters fill out the woodwind, brass, string, and percussion sections. Timelines & Tragedies is a time line of family history. Tracing Lamoureux’s ancestors to their days of French Canadian fur trading, the Great Depression, the struggles of his parents’ generation with Vietnam, and eventually concluding with his life in the Omaha.

Timelines & Tragedies was awarded OEA – Album of the Year in 2008 and charted CMJ Top 200. The song Chicago and North Western was featured on the PBS television series Roadtrip Nation.

Live performances Midwest Dilemma can still be Lamoureux and his classical guitar or any variety of the orchestral-folk-rock ensemble.

The next decade in music: tips on how to survive in an evolving industry.
Ten steps to becoming a rock star: tips for musicians on how to make it big.

We have some great speakers on board. These issues will be discussed by some of the most important figures in the South West Music industry. The sessions are taking place at Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum between 2pm and 4pm this Saturday. The debates will have an informal atmosphere and attendees will be encouraged to discuss the issues with the experts.

Swift Manouver are a Cheltenham based three piece band formed in early 2009, with the current line up taking shape in August of that year. The band, have played venues across the country supporting both local and visiting artists with their unique and passionate fusion of indie and reggae. They are lively performers on stage who, not only perform their own compositions but also, make a deep connection with the audience through their lyrics.

Gaining in popularity Swift Manouver has become a much talked about subject on the music scene. They have fast become recognised as one of the best up and coming bands in the Southwest. Their musical influences include Blink 182, Bullet For My Valentine, Less Than Jake, Bob Marley, Reel Big Fish, Spunge and Thrice.

China Soul, daughter of actors David Soul and Julia Nickson, grew up in Los Angeles, California and studied creative writing at Orange County High School of the Arts. Playing various venues throughout L.A. she developed a steady fan-base within the acoustic music scene.

In 2006, she made the jump over the pond, and after obtaining her British citizenship, now resides in London. In August 2008, China began co-writing with BAFTA Award Nominee Chaz Jankel of The Blockheads and has now completed her debut album, ‘Secrets and Words' (out 18 October 2010). China's song ‘Cold', released as a limited edition 7” white vinyl, is now available to purchase through FooFar Records.

Luke Leighfield is a 22-year-old pop star from Upton upon Severn and Southampton, UK. He has released three albums on his own label, Got Got Need Records, and his only single so far, 'If You Haven't Got Anything to Say' reached number 5 in the UK indie singles chart in June 2008.

Luke has played 550 gigs in eleven countries around the world, including Russia and China. He has recorded live sessions for Huw Stephens (Radio 1) and John Kennedy (Xfm).

Dale is a solo acoustic guitarist and harp-guitarist from the UK. In 2009 he released "How The Light Gets In" his second album & first solo album which is available worldwide on itunes. An experienced teacher, Dale has made a popular video series based on his techniques, many of which are available as free video podcasts, and on Youtube.

Jim Lockey and the Solemn Sun are a country folk punk band from Cheltenham town made up for four lost souls with a passion for politically poetic storytelling. Whilst beginning its life as a solo project for Jim at the close of 2006, the subsequent years have seen him develop strongly as a songwriter and performer, leading him to recruit a cavalcade of the towns best musical talent (including fellow istf label mate Joe and ex-holloh bandmate Phil) to equal the forthright natures of his influences (Bright Eyes, Billy Bragg, Frank Turner).

Following the success of his 2008 debut record "I'll Be Neon", Jim Lockey has gone from strength to strength achieving profile slots at prestigious festivals and venues and being personally invited to share stages with those musicians who have and still do influence his sound to date. Since the rise of the Solemn Sun the band have played alongside cult members of the new folk movement including Frank Turner, Johnny Flynn, Mumford and Sons, Chris T-T and Peter Doherty and have just put the finishing touches to this year's follow up record entitled 'Atlases', an LP which sets the world to rights, through screaming lungs and alt.country rhythms, it stands as a testiment to the toils of a young British generation.

Virtual singers/performers are projected to a screen/wall, they are lips-synced to the music and interact with the audience and other real performers live on stage, like real persons.

Based in London, USA, Italy, Africa and many other places in the world, Hitchhikers of the Galaxy's musicians compose, record and produce tracks when they meet together, as they are a group of good friends or via-internet more likely. The Strange Death of Liberal England began life as a mainly instrumental band, however as they grew as a band lyrics began to appear in their songs. Their music is often compared to the likes of Arcade Fire and the early work of Pixies.

The band have a huge live following, and have played many gigs throughout Europe, mostly notably Latitude Festival, Primavera Sound (Barcelona) and a live Maida Vale studio set for Steve Lamacq. The band have also supported Manic Street Preachers and The Editors on tour.

Vocalist Romy Quinnen and guitarist Andy Oliveri make up the soul-folk hit-machine that is Midnight Mile. Thrill Collins are most noted for their application of the skiffle genre to modern music. Taking inspiration from the DIY ethics of the movement and artists such as Lonnie Donegan, The Vipers and The Quarrymen they have sought to replicate the style and humour that is so closely associated with the genre. Using the trio set-up of guitar, upright bass the band substituted the traditional washboard percussion for the Cuban cajon.

2010 has seen Thrill Collins play numerous festivals across the UK including a headline slot on the acoustic stage at Wychwood Festival, 2000 Trees and a European tour. The band also played the opening night of the Cheltenham Jazz Festival alongside Joe Stilgoe and Imelda May. Catch them whilst you can at Walk the Line... they're off on a US tour in November! My First Tooth were a surprise last minute addition to the Walk the Line festival line-up last year, so we are delighted to invite them back for 2010. Festival goers were treated to an acoustic set of their melodic folk-pop delights in a late night set at D-Fly 12 months ago and this time they are returning for a full band show. Elle Cooper performed at Walk The Line Festival 2009

Originally from semi-rural Abergavenny, but now living in Cheltenham, Elle Cooper's songs overflow with poppy, folky goodness with the occasional hint of jazz. Elle played a chilled out acoustic set at Walk the Line Festival 2009.

The Echoes are a pop rock group based Cheltenham. The release of their debut EP coincided with Walk the Line Festival 2009, so it was a perfect time for us to add them to the line-up. The band played an acoustic session at D-Fly.

You may have seen the band playing to enthusiastic crowds at 2 Pigs or the Frog and Fiddle in recent months. The show they are playing for us will be an intimate, acoustic performance showcasing of their new material as well as the classics.

Aspen Sails played at Walk the Line Festival 2009 and were widely praised by everyone who caught their set.

Aspen Sails is the brainchild of Lincoln born folksters Bertie and Charlie. The music they make is a soaring wave of hook filled melody orchestrated through their intertwining vocals, and gently caressed guitars. They are a must see band for fans of Fleet Foxes, The Shins, Kings of Convenience and Iron and Wine.

Taking influence from old-school American emo such as American Football, Aspen Sails have transformed the sound into their own, filling it out with folk guitar sounds and narrative lyrics whilst substituting a full band sound for something overly intimate and overwhelming - an insight into two young men’s genius via the medium of beautiful 3 minute folk songs.

Since the formation of the band, Aspen Sails have taken in performances alongside the likes of Slow Club, First Aid Kit, Jay Jay Pistolet, Wild Beasts, and toured with Californian quartet Chief.

Surely one of the most promising bands in the UK, Jim Lockey and the Solemn Sun have recently supported the likes of Frank Turner, Mumford and Sons, and Chris T-T as well as appearing at Two Thousand Trees and Wychwood Festivals.

Review of Jim's performance at Walk the Line Festival by Lotte Lawrence

This band is all it’s cracked up to be without a doubt. The whole room is alive with anticipation; it feels incredibly intimate and exciting. Jim’s beautiful, soulfully accented vocal coupled with ingenious folksy riffs is a joy to listen to. It’s eye wateringly beautiful and yet it’s subtle, it’s not brash at all, very unique indeed. Their lyrics are just perfect for the music, making the songs tangible and incredibly memorable.

The gig as an event is incredible too, there is such an unbelievable atmosphere, we’re all dancing with each other, feeling jovial and it’s fun… really fun. The band is just so pleasurable to watch and be apart of, it’s just music the way it should be – talented people coming together to experiment and share it in a non pretentious and accessible way, pure joy. With catchy and soulful tunes it’s pretty difficult not to love this band. As the last few songs are strummed and sung out Jim and co move into the crowd, the whole gig has just become something more; they are playing to you now not a crowd. Jim’s voice hardly differs and bassist Phil dons a recorder, which gives the sound a quirky and sweet edge, it’s pretty. With the crowd centred around the tambourines and handclaps, arms around each other and tapping feet I realize how much I love this.

Believe the hype, Jim Lockey and The Solemn Sun are my new favourite live band. Fact.

Charlie Baxter is a Cheltenham based one man electro-hippity-hoppity-popitty-rock band! He performed at Walk the Line Festival 2009, kicking off a great evening of music at D-Fly.

His solo project aims to bring a more dance-electro approach to his rock and pop background, as well as having fun with some crazy synth noises!

Influenced by bands like Klaxons, Hadouken and Digitalism, there is a clear new-rave sound, but the songs are also shaped by classics like Michael Jackson and and other 80s legends.

The Fennel Situation caught played a set at Walk the Line Festival 2009. They performed an early evening set in D-Fly.

Liz and John started jamming and putting studio tracks down in September 2008 for what was going to be "not a rock band". The Fennel Situation was born. Soon Paul joined on drums and then Andy on bass in early 2009.

The band are have an excellent live set and are set to release material on independent record label Vision Division later this year.

Having been part of various bands Juey thought it was about time she could see what she could do on her own. It turned out to be a good decision. Juey plays soft, acoustic-folk songs.

Previously he has played the BBC electric proms with Edwyn Collins and played at fun festivals including Great Escape, Wireless, Glastonbury, Latitude, V Festival and Truck. Sam has played with many great artists, like Tellison, Dave House, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, Luke Leighfield, Johnny Foreigner, Scouting For Girls, Frank Turner, Pigeon Detectives, Goodbooks, Ben's Brother, Kate Walsh, KT Tunstall, Athlete, The Fratellis and Walter Schreifels amongst others.

He has done sessions for Huw Stephens (Radio 1), Colin Murray (Radio 1), Zane Lowe (Radio 1), Janice Long (Radio 2) and John Kennedy (XFM). His songs have been played by Jo Whiley, Zane Lowe, Colin Murray, Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens on Radio 1, and also by John Kennedy and Steve Harris on XFM.

The Sam Isaac show frequently resembles an indie cottage industry. Friends make artwork, do recording, direct music videos and don clipboards. Perfect strangers sell his CDs. Sam’s part of the bargain is donning an acoustic guitar, a Casio keyboard or occasionally just his own voice and making the music that is at the centre of all of this.

Eschewing the singer songwriter conventions of whimsical strummery, Oxygen Thief is all about the riff, big shouty tunes, and headbanging until your hair comes loose and makes you look a bit trampy.

Fighting Fiction performed at Walk the Line Festival 2009, providing a popular rock set at the Frog and Fiddle. The band's sound is a powerful collision of indie rock guitar riffs, reggae tinged punk and socially aware lyrics. These are songs written with anger and sung with passion. The Bristol based four-piece evoke an honest and fundamentally English sound that is reminiscent of the brooding reggae guitar hooks of 'London Calling' era Clash, the lyrical wordplay and vocal delivery of Billy Bragg, and more recently, the acoustic guitar based sing-along sensibilities of Frank Turner and the King Blues.

Review of Tubelords performance at Walk the Line festival 2009 by Lotte Lawrence

Damien the bassist managed to catch me at the bar, notebook in tow and came to the well observed conclusion that yes, in fact I was about to review his band. He gave me his contribution to the write up – “ Was ace. End.” Thanks Damien.

They begin with fast moving riffs and cool little beat patterns with American accented vocals. Their chords quickly change and progress, it’s an ever changing morphing sound. The overall approach to songs is quite unique, it’s like lots of little nuggets of musical goodness pressed together to form an unpredictable and delectable noise – vocal harmonies are pretty on the money too.

I really began to fall in love with this band second song in. It’s got this sweet and romantic sounding break down with a little touch of triangle that is really lovely. Then it suddenly crashes back into writhing anger-fuelled music with a mass of symbols and violent guitars.

Their plucky little guitar parts are oh so cool and catchy; they are the segments of a song that you always turn round to your mates and beep – bop along to.

Overall it’s an almost romantic sound quite teenage in a way, in a good way though. It’s not childish or simple by any means. It’s music that has a lot of feeling; you can really relate your emotions to it… feel something along with it.

However, I am never a fan of singing with an American accent when you’re not American. It’s annoying.

Their stage presence however, is really something to behold. With lots of jumping around the stage, clambering about and plenty of crowd interaction. It feels personal, oozes confidence and it’s exciting.

This is without a doubt, a must see live band. Or to quote Damien – “Was ace. End.”
